Odoo and ERPNext both started as open-source projects, but they have grown in very different directions. Here is what that means for licensing, upgrades and day-to-day use in the UAE.
Odoo and ERPNext are both Python-based, self-hostable ERPs covering accounting, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, projects and HR. Odoo follows an open-core model, with Community under LGPL and Enterprise as a per-user subscription, and offers wider front-office apps such as website, ecommerce and POS. ERPNext is fully open source under GPL with no per-user licence, focused on back-office operations.
Companies that land on Odoo vs ERPNext UAE have usually already decided they want an open, extensible ERP rather than a closed SaaS product. Both are written in Python, both can be self-hosted, and both cover accounting, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, projects and HR. The differences show up in licensing, product philosophy and the size of the ecosystem around each one.
Odoo follows an open-core model. Odoo Community is open source under the LGPL, while Odoo Enterprise adds proprietary apps, the full accounting suite, Studio, mobile features and hosting on Odoo.sh, all under a per-user subscription. ERPNext, built on the Frappe Framework, is fully open source under the GPL: every feature is available without a licence fee, and Frappe earns money from Frappe Cloud hosting and support plans.
UAE ERP Experts is an Odoo Official Partner and an ERPNext / Frappe partner. We have seen both succeed and both struggle, almost always because of fit rather than quality. For production-heavy businesses, our ERPNext vs Odoo for manufacturing page goes deeper; this page covers the general comparison.

Ten points where the two platforms differ in practice.
| Odoo | ERPNext | |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing | Community under LGPL; Enterprise is proprietary and per-user | Fully open source under GPL, no per-user licence |
| Framework | Odoo framework (Python, PostgreSQL, OWL front end) | Frappe Framework (Python, MariaDB or PostgreSQL, metadata-driven DocTypes) |
| App breadth | Very wide catalogue including website, ecommerce, POS, rental, field service, marketing and thousands of community modules | Focused core ERP plus Frappe HR, Helpdesk, CRM and LMS apps; smaller third-party catalogue |
| User experience | Polished, modern interface with drag-and-drop views | Clean, consistent forms and lists; more utilitarian in feel |
| Accounting | Full accounting is an Enterprise feature; Community has invoicing | Full double-entry accounting, cost centers and accounting dimensions included |
| No-code customization | Odoo Studio (Enterprise) | Customize Form, custom fields, workflows and print formats built in |
| Release cycle | One major version per year; Odoo offers an upgrade service for Enterprise databases | Major versions roughly every one to two years; you or your partner run upgrades |
| Hosting | Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, any cloud or on-premise | Frappe Cloud, any cloud or on-premise |
| Partner ecosystem | Large global network with many UAE partners | Smaller but growing network; fewer specialists in the UAE |
| Typical cost profile | Subscription grows with user count | Hosting and support cost; little change as users increase |
Both projects evolve quickly. Confirm the specific version and edition in any proposal you receive.
Use these to test which platform fits your company before you look at demos.
If you need website, ecommerce, POS and marketing in the same database as your ERP, Odoo's breadth is hard to match. ERPNext focuses more tightly on back-office operations.
With many users, Odoo Enterprise fees add up. ERPNext removes licence cost entirely, though you still fund hosting, support and development.
Teams new to ERP often find Odoo's interface friendlier. ERPNext is consistent and logical, but users must follow the document chain from order to delivery to invoice.
Odoo's yearly release cycle means planned upgrade projects for custom modules. ERPNext upgrades are less frequent but are fully your responsibility or your partner's.
There are more Odoo consultants and developers in the region, which helps with hiring and second opinions. Check that any ERPNext partner has real Frappe development depth.
If you plan to distribute modified software to others, the difference between LGPL and GPL matters. For internal use by a single company it rarely does, but your legal team may ask.
Typical UAE situations and the platform that usually suits each.
| Situation | Choose Odoo if... | Choose ERPNext if... |
|---|---|---|
| Retail with online sales | Shops, POS and ecommerce must share stock in real time | Retail is minor and back-office control is the priority |
| Many low-activity users | User count is moderate and the subscription is acceptable | Large numbers of users need occasional access without per-user fees |
| Limited IT resources | You prefer Odoo Online or Odoo.sh with vendor-managed upgrades | A partner manages Frappe Cloud or your server on a support plan |
| Specialized processes | An existing Odoo app or community module covers the gap | You want to model new document types inside the core with little code |
| Services and projects | You also need helpdesk, field service and planning apps | Projects, timesheets and billing are enough alongside accounting |
| Long-term vendor independence | You are comfortable with Odoo SA's Enterprise roadmap | You want every feature available under an open licence |
Both platforms also support trading, distribution and construction well; see our industry pages for specifics.
Each platform supports UAE rules through configuration. Discuss tax treatments with your tax advisor.
Odoo's UAE localization ships a chart of accounts, 5% VAT taxes and a tax report; ERPNext has UAE regional settings and a VAT 201 report. Both need careful setup for reverse charge, zero-rated exports and designated zone transactions.
The FTA keeps a register of accredited tax accounting software. Check the current register for the specific product before relying on it. With self-hosted deployments of either platform, you also own the backup and retention controls.
Analytic accounts in Odoo and accounting dimensions in ERPNext let you tag non-deductible costs, related-party balances and qualifying free zone income for corporate tax workings.
UAE e-invoicing uses PINT AE through Accredited Service Providers, mandatory from 1 January 2027 for businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more and 1 July 2027 for others. Both platforms will need an ASP connection; check the latest Ministry of Finance and FTA guidance.
