What is low-code development and how does it fit with an ERP in the UAE?

Low-code development builds business apps with visual tools and limited code, usually to replace spreadsheets that have grown too important, such as site diaries, visa renewal trackers or petty cash approvals. In the UAE, common platforms are Zoho Creator, Odoo Studio, the Frappe Framework behind ERPNext and Microsoft Power Apps. Apps hand their data to the ERP instead of living separately.

  • Low-code apps often replace critical Excel trackers and WhatsApp approvals.
  • Zoho Creator, Odoo Studio, Frappe Framework and Power Apps are common low-code options.
  • Typical apps cover approvals, inventory, field service, expenses, procurement and projects.
  • No-code and low-code differ in how much scripting the platform allows.

What this low-code section covers

Low code development in the UAE usually starts with a spreadsheet that has grown too important. A site diary kept in Excel, a visa renewal tracker on a shared drive, a petty cash approval that lives in WhatsApp messages: each one works until the person who built it goes on leave, or until the finance team needs the numbers in the ERP. Low-code platforms such as Zoho Creator, Odoo Studio, the Frappe Framework behind ERPNext and Microsoft Power Apps let a small team turn those workarounds into proper applications with forms, roles, approvals, mobile access and an audit trail, in weeks rather than the months a fully coded system takes.

The pages in this section are organized by what you want to build. Some explain the approach itself: the difference between no-code and low-code, and how far you can extend an ERP without writing code. Others cover one type of app each, such as approval apps, inventory apps, field service apps, expense apps, procurement apps and project apps. Each guide names the forms, roles and records involved, shows how the app hands data to the ERP, and compares how the four platforms handle it.

We implement Zoho, Odoo, ERPNext, Dynamics 365 and custom software, so the guides recommend by fit rather than by product. A company already on Zoho One will usually get the most from Zoho Creator, an Odoo Enterprise user from Studio, an ERPNext user from Frappe DocTypes and scripts, and a Microsoft 365 or Dynamics 365 shop from Power Apps. Where none of these is a good match, custom ERP development remains an option.

What this low-code section covers
  • No-code versus low-code: who builds, who maintains, what each can do
  • Extending an ERP with low-code instead of heavy customization
  • App guides by process: approvals, inventory, field service, expenses, procurement, projects
  • Internal tools for HR, admin, PRO and operations teams
  • Integration with the ERP ledger, VAT and e-invoicing flows
  • Governance: roles, audit trail, data residency and ownership

Six ways to use the low-code guides

Each card groups related pages. Start with the concept guides if you are still choosing an approach, or jump to the app type that matches your current workaround.

No-code or low-code?

No code development explains what business users can build themselves with visual builders, while low code business apps covers the common departmental apps that need a little scripting.

Extending your ERP

Low code ERP shows how to add custom objects and logic on top of Odoo, Zoho, ERPNext or Dynamics 365, and no code ERP covers what you can configure purely through settings and studio tools.

Custom and internal apps

Custom business app development helps you decide between low-code, a coded app or an ERP module. Internal business app development focuses on tools for HR, admin and PRO teams.

Workflows and approvals

Workflow app development covers multi-stage processes with statuses and SLAs, and approval app development covers approval matrices by amount, department and cost center.

Operations apps

Inventory app development covers barcode counts, stock requests and site stores, while field service app development covers technician job cards, photos and customer signatures.

Spend and project control

Expense management apps capture receipts with TRN and VAT, procurement apps handle requisitions and quotations, and project management apps track tasks, timesheets and site progress.

Ask an Expert
What is the difference between low-code and no-code?

No-code tools let a business user build with drag-and-drop forms, rules and reports only. Low-code tools add a scripting layer, such as Deluge in Zoho Creator, Python and server scripts in Frappe, or Power Fx in Power Apps, for calculations, integrations and logic the visual builder cannot express. Most real UAE business apps end up as low-code: mostly visual, with a small amount of script.

Do we need a low-code platform if we already have an ERP?

Not always. Many gaps can be closed by configuring the ERP itself. A separate low-code app makes sense when the process involves people who do not use the ERP, such as site staff, drivers or external vendors, or when the process is unique to your business and would otherwise need heavy customization of the ERP core.

Which low-code platform is best for a UAE company?

The one that sits closest to your existing systems. Zoho Creator fits Zoho users, Odoo Studio fits Odoo Enterprise users, Frappe fits ERPNext users and Power Apps fits Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365 users. Licensing model, Arabic interface needs, hosting region and who will maintain the app also matter, and we compare these in each guide.

How long does a low-code app take to build?

A focused app with a few forms, one approval flow and a dashboard often takes three to six weeks including testing and training. Apps with several integrations, offline mobile use or complex calculations take longer. We confirm a range after a short discovery session.

Who owns the app once it is built?

You do. The app lives in your Zoho, Odoo, ERPNext or Microsoft tenant, under your admin accounts. We document the data model, scripts and integrations so your team or another partner can maintain it, and we can provide ongoing support if you prefer.
