Can Odoo track project profitability for a UAE consultancy or fit-out firm?

Odoo Project tracks project profitability by giving each project an analytic account to which timesheets, expenses, purchase orders and vendor bills are charged and customer invoices credited. UAE engineering consultancies, fit-out firms, IT services companies and agencies can bill at a fixed price, by milestone or by time and materials from approved timesheets, with service sales orders creating projects automatically.

  • Odoo Project shows tasks on kanban, list and calendar views; Gantt and Planning are Enterprise features.
  • Timesheets in Odoo can be logged from the web, the mobile app or a task timer.
  • Clients can follow chosen tasks and comment through Odoo's customer portal.
  • Large contractors needing BOQ progress billing and retention usually add industry modules or customisation to Odoo Project.

Odoo Project for UAE project-based businesses

Odoo Project Management UAE clients run work that is sold, delivered and billed as projects: engineering consultancies in Dubai, fit-out firms working across Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, IT services companies, marketing agencies and interior designers. Their common problem is that nobody knows whether a project made money until weeks after it closed. Hours are logged late or not at all, subcontractor bills are booked to general expenses, and invoices go out when someone remembers.

The Odoo Project app organizes work into projects, tasks and subtasks shown on kanban boards, lists, calendars and, in Enterprise, Gantt charts. Each project has an analytic account behind it. Timesheets, expenses, purchase orders and vendor bills can all be charged to that account, and customer invoices credited to it, which gives a live profitability view per project.

Billing is driven from the sales side. A service product on a sales order can create a project or a task automatically and be invoiced at a fixed price, by milestone or by time and materials from approved timesheets. We usually deliver Project together with Odoo Sales and Odoo Accounting. Contractors with heavier site and BOQ needs should also read Odoo for construction companies.

UAE Compliance

UAE points that affect project accounting

Odoo supports these through accounting and tax configuration. Confirm treatments with your tax advisor.

VAT on milestone and progress invoices

UAE VAT at 5% applies to most project services billed locally. Milestone and time-based invoices from Odoo carry your TRN and the prescribed fields; timing of supply for long contracts should be confirmed with your advisor.

Corporate tax and project margins

With corporate tax at 9% on taxable income above AED 375,000, clean revenue and cost allocation per project and entity supports both management decisions and tax workpapers.

E-invoicing for project invoices

Project invoices will fall under UAE e-invoicing, exchanged through Accredited Service Providers using PINT AE, from 1 January 2027 for businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more and 1 July 2027 for others. Check the latest Ministry of Finance and FTA guidance.

Working hours

Timesheets give evidence of hours worked, which helps when reviewing overtime and working hour limits under UAE Labour Law with your HR advisor.

Tips for implementing Odoo Project

Project apps fail when they ask for more data than teams will give. These tips keep it practical.

  • Create one or two project templates with standard stages and tasks per service line
  • Define service products for each billing method before building projects
  • Set an hourly cost per employee so timesheets produce a labor cost
  • Ask for timesheets daily or weekly, and decide who approves them
  • Charge subcontractor purchase orders to the project's analytic account
  • Agree which milestones trigger invoices and who marks them reached
  • Share only selected tasks with clients through the portal
  • Review project updates in a fixed weekly meeting from the first month

FAQs

Odoo Project Management UAE questions

Still have a question? Our consultants are happy to help.

Ask an Expert
Is Odoo Project enough for construction projects?

For fit-out and smaller contracting work it often is, combined with Purchase, Inventory and analytic accounting. Large contractors needing BOQ-based progress billing, retention and variation tracking usually add industry modules or customization, which we assess during scoping.

Can clients see project progress?

Yes. Projects and tasks can be shared through the customer portal, where clients see the tasks you choose, comment on them and, if enabled, review timesheets.

How is project profitability calculated?

Each project has an analytic account. Timesheet costs, expenses, purchases and vendor bills are charged to it and invoices credited to it, and the project update shows revenue, costs and margin from those entries.

Does Odoo Project include Gantt charts?

Gantt views for projects and tasks, along with the Planning app for scheduling people, are part of Odoo Enterprise. Community users have kanban, list and calendar views.

Can we bill a retainer plus extra hours?

Yes. A fixed monthly service can be combined with a time-based service product on the same sales order, so the retainer is invoiced on schedule and extra approved hours are invoiced as delivered.

How do teams log time on the go?

Staff can log hours in the Odoo mobile app or start a timer on a task from the browser. Many consultancies set a weekly timesheet reminder and lock periods after approval.
