What should an inventory dashboard show for a UAE trading or retail business?

An inventory dashboard should show total stock value by warehouse, stock aging, fast, slow and dead stock, low-stock and reorder alerts, and inventory turnover or days of stock by category. For UAE traders importing with long lead times from China, India and Europe, it highlights both cash tied up in unsold stock and items about to run out.

  • Many UAE distributors define slow-moving stock as no sale in 90 to 180 days.
  • Food and pharma businesses often use expiry dates rather than sales age.
  • Reorder alerts use minimum levels, open purchase orders and supplier lead time.
  • Buyers should review reorder suggestions before purchase orders are created.

Why an inventory dashboard matters for UAE stockholders

An inventory dashboard UAE trading, retail and distribution companies use well answers two opposite questions at once: where is cash tied up in stock that is not selling, and which items are about to run out? Both cost money. Dead stock in a Ras Al Khor or Jebel Ali warehouse eats rent and eventually becomes a write-off, while a stock-out on a fast-moving SKU loses an order to a competitor who can deliver the same day.

Most UAE businesses already have the data in their ERP: item masters, receipts, deliveries, transfers and valuations. What they lack is a view that turns it into decisions. Buyers reorder from memory, the warehouse manager knows that certain pallets have not moved in a year but has no value attached, and finance only sees inventory as one balance sheet line. Long import lead times from China, India and Europe make the problem worse because the reorder decision has to be made weeks before the shortage appears.

The inventory dashboard brings stock value, aging, movement classes, shortages, reorder alerts and turnover onto one screen, filterable by warehouse, brand and category. It is about stock levels and value; physical operations such as picking and putaway belong on the warehouse dashboard, and purchase follow-up on the procurement dashboard. For the underlying system, see inventory management software.

Inventory dashboard KPI definitions

Definitions of slow and dead stock vary by business. Agree the thresholds first; fashion retail and spare parts distribution will choose very different numbers.

ERP Workflow

How stock data flows into the dashboard

Accurate dashboards need every movement posted in the ERP, including transfers between warehouses and returns from customers.

  1. 1GRN posted on receipt
  2. 2Transfers recorded between warehouses
  3. 3Deliveries and returns posted
  4. 4Costing updated with landed cost
  5. 5Cycle counts adjust variances
  6. 6Reorder rules calculate suggestions
  7. 7Buyer reviews alerts and raises POs

One shared database: every step updates stock, finance and reports in real time.

Before trusting the inventory dashboard

These checks decide whether the numbers on the screen match the shelf.

  • Item masters have a category, brand, unit of measure and default warehouse
  • Opening stock was loaded with original receipt dates, so aging is meaningful
  • Landed costs such as freight, customs duty and clearing are added to item cost
  • Inter-warehouse transfers are posted, not just moved physically
  • Reorder levels and lead times are set for at least A and B class items
  • Negative stock is blocked or reviewed daily
  • Cycle counts run on a schedule, with variances approved by a manager
  • Batch and expiry dates are captured where products have shelf life

Data sources and tools

The dashboard runs natively in Zoho Inventory, Odoo Inventory, ERPNext Stock or Dynamics 365, and can be extended with BI tools. Scanning data from RFID or barcode devices keeps quantities current.

Inventory dashboard questions

Ask an Expert
What counts as slow-moving or dead stock?

There is no single rule. Many UAE distributors use no sale in 90 to 180 days for slow-moving and 12 months for dead stock, while food and pharma use expiry dates instead. We set the thresholds with you and show them on the dashboard.

How are reorder alerts calculated?

Usually from a minimum quantity or reorder level per item and warehouse, plus open purchase orders and supplier lead time. More advanced setups use average daily demand and safety stock. The buyer reviews suggestions before POs are created.

Does stock value include customs duty and freight?

It should. Most ERPs support landed cost allocation so that duty, freight and clearing charges are added to item cost. Without it, stock value and margins are understated.

Can we see stock across several warehouses and entities?

Yes. The dashboard can filter by warehouse, entity or region and show a combined total. For a trading business with many locations, see inventory software for trading companies.

What is a healthy inventory turnover?

It depends on the sector. Fast-moving consumer goods turn much faster than spare parts or project materials. The useful measure is your own trend by category, compared with your target days of stock.

Is this the same as a warehouse dashboard?

No. The inventory dashboard is about stock levels, value and replenishment. The warehouse dashboard covers daily operations such as receiving, putaway, picking, dispatch and staff productivity.
